VHS 2018 Summer Development Baseball

VHS Summer Development Baseball Program

Registration is now closed. May 25th at 5pm was the deadline for players to register (have to orders our uniforms, etc.!!)

Hi Vipers,

Dave Peck here Coach of the VHS pre-freshman baseball high school team.

As of right now, we have 16 players who are registered for the VHS Baseball Pre-Freshman team and per Vandegrift Head Coach McGee. . .he wants as many baseball players as possible to participate in this program!  From a coaching side, all of our Coaches have very good baseball knowledge and we also want to invite you VHS-area dads to help as well.  We also have several dad's committed to helping already, however we like to have "any and all" help keeping the boys improving!

From a fee aspect, we are looking to keep this as inexpensive as possible and we look to have our athletes in a simple comfortable dri-fit jersey with the VHS logo for your son.  We NEED to get the dri-fits shirts ordered as soon as possible so with the confirmed players, please send me your son's cap size along with his jersey size.

We will be hiring and paying for Professional Umps to make these competitions as fluid as possible for each of our 16+ games in June and early July.  There will also be some extraneous expenses that will need to be covered as well.  Thus, plan and budget for a $165 fee per player which covers all of these VHS pre-freshman baseball events.

Things still seem moving quickly, but here are next steps as we understand them right now:

  • Sign-up now! We have a 5/25/18 is the deadline for players to register (have to orders our uniforms, etc.!!)
  • The week of 5/30  & 6/4  will be our first practices at VHS at 6PM - 8:30PM.   We are hoping that players can make one or both of the practices to let us know where they would like to see their play time.  Along with us ordering the jerseys and ball caps for the players as part of this program, please have them wear the following for games: white baseball pants, black belt, black socks and metal cleats. (Unless otherwise notified if playing on turf fields.)
  • Starting the week of 6/6 and running through early July, the plan is to have 2 games per week and in some cases a double header per week.  Because the nature of Select Baseball, we have most of our games scheduled for Monday's and Wednesdays not to conflict with weekend tournaments.
  • Games are not mandatory for players, but we do ask that if a player commits to being at a game(s), that they be there and arrive on time.  We are going to do our best to create line ups that allow for evenly distributed play time in the field and at bats, so understanding which players will be present for each game(s) is critical. If you athlete doesn't participate in practices, we simply don't have a feel for his competencies for his specific position he wants to play.

Our primary goal of the summer is to create the beginning of a unified group of players that will compete hard for each other, their coaches and VHS for 4 years.  We want them to gel, have fun and take great pride in wearing the VHS logo and uniform!

As mentioned, games are not mandatory and this program is not intended to be a substitute for other baseball teams or programs the players are involved with.  Many of the boys will be concluding a long spring/summer season, and we recognize that arms need rest and that summer is often a "down time" designated for other interests (lake, pool, vacations, etc.)  We will only look to have the pitchers throw 2 innings per game and limit their pitch count for this reason!

While we will expect them to compete hard once they step on to Venom Field or the other area high school fields during games, we want this to be a fun, supplemental experience for them -- an opportunity to hang out with their buddies, make new friends heading into HS, etc.  Also, please feel free to pass this information along to any parent whose baseball player is heading to VHS.

Please let me know if you have any questions -- we look forward to a fun season with you all and your boys!

Thanks and Go Vipers --
